Over the years Sofia has enjoyed lots of appreciation. In Haiti, she was represented by Galerie Flamboyant, Port-au-Prince, and by the Art Gallery at Port-au-Prince International Airport (2001-2003). Her work was also shown in several group exhibitions, and she had two solo exhibitions (see: expositions)
Four of Sofia’s Haitian watercolours were used as illustrations in a report “From Gardens to Markets” (2012), about the position of Madam Sara’s – market women – in Haiti, written by Talitha Stam. The Haitian Embassy in Washington, USA, also used one of Sofia’s watercolours, for a flyer for an open day in 2013 about Rara bands, and for a poster that was exhibited. Early in 2014 Sofia also designed the logo for the travel website www.theonearmedcrab.com.
Sofia’s most successful solo exhibition was organized by Pioneer Gallery in New Delhi, India, in 2006. This show received significant publicity: First Cities magazine (4-11 March 2006) wrote about her work: “Sofia’s watercolour impressions of the places she’s traveled to immediately engage with their effervescence, as does the artist as she enthuses about her cross-continental travels (..). She talks about the moments captured by her fluid, fresh strokes of colour: a market place, women enjoying an afternoon’s siesta, the calming presence of a sea of monks, a doorway framed by creepers (..)”. Sofia’s work was also shown in group exhibitions in the Canadian High Commission and at the half-yearly sales exhibitions of the International Women’s Group in New Delhi (2004-2006).
In Indonesia Sofia’s work was exhibited in the Ranch Café and Gallery in Banda Aceh (2006-2007). The Indonesian newspaper Aceh World (November 22-28, 2006) wrote in a profile about Sofia: “For her art, she has drawn inspiration from the people and the landscapes of the (..) countries (she traveled to). Take the time to stop and look at the vibrant watercolours of Sofia Carbajo, and be transported to India or Haiti without ever stepping a foot out of (here).”
During a short spell in London Sofia exhibited with the Studio 19 Artworks Group in the Public Library in Wimbledon, London, in November 2007, and with friends in a private exhibition in Wimbledon in December 2007.
Sofia’s first group exhibition in The Netherlands was in March 2009, organized by the Rabo Bank in Didam. Her most recent exhibition was in Doesburg, in the summer of 2014. Several local papers commented on the exhibition: “Colour is abundantly present in her work from China, India and Indonesia, countries wehre she lived for lonegr or shorter periods, and in the paintains based on her travels, for instance to Vietnam, Somalia and Guatemala, which are also represented”.
